The origin of the
Automaton Legion began with the
Cyborg Nation, a group of secessionist half-humans who embraced the ideology of Socialism and unilateraly declared independence from
Super Earth on their homeworld of Cyberstan sometime prior to 2084. Following a terrorist attack on a Super Earth Mega City attributed to the
Cyborgs, the Federation declared war and ultimately defeated the half-human rebels, imprisoning them for rehabiliation in the mines of Cyberstan. It was here, during 100 years of "Democratization" carried out on their planet by
Super Earth, that the
Cyborgs plotted their revenge.
Intel recovered by
Super Earth in October 2185 indicates that a spaceship called Vessel 00 departed from Cyberstan in 2180, 4 years before the first
Automaton attack. Though Vessel 00's destination remains unknown, the ship is referred to in exultation by the Automatons and is considered to have been carrying their "seed".[1] Additional intel recovered in 2186 finally revealed that, during their "rehabilitation", the
Cyborgs had utilized robotic mining aides provided to them by the Federation to secretly create the first generation of
Automatons, which were then placed on Vessel 00 and launched into deep space. These prototypes presumably began upgrading themselves and building up their forces until they became a sizable fighting force capable of facing down even the
Helldivers.[2]
According to a decrypted message from the
Cyborg Nation[3] announcing the "Independence of Cyberstan", the
Cyborgs consider the
Automatons to be their "children", created to continue fighting against
Super Earth and one day liberate the Cyborgs from their enslavement on Cyberstan following the end of the First Galactic War in 2084:

Automaton propaganda claiming to have "obliterated inequality".
Like the
Cyborgs, the
Automatons are a "Socialist" society, opposing the "Capitalism" of
Super Earth. Unlike the Cyborgs, however, they appear to be entirely mechanical beings, no longer requiring traitors from Super Earth. Automatons all have similar characteristics, such as dark metallic bodies, digitigrade legs, skull-like heads, armour plates, and a pair of red glowing eyes.

In early 2184, alongside the
Terminid outbreaks in the East,
Automaton forces made several incursions into the Severin Sector. Maia, Durgen and Tibit were captured first as well as Malevelon Creek and Ubanea. On February 8th, the first official footage of Automatons was released by the
Ministry of Truth. Now in a two front war,
Super Earth made the decision to mass mobilise the
Helldivers at a scale not seen since the First Galactic War. After the first phase of Operation Valiant Enclosure was completed, the Automatons launched a surprise attack into several developed worlds in the Xzar and Trigon Sectors.
Operation Swift Disassembly

Ministry of Defense statement about the Automatons.
The Western Front had had little activity during Operation Valiant Enclosure, with only minor engagements in the Xzar Sector. After the conclusion of Operation Guardian on March 26th, interrogated Bots started referencing an
Automaton plan called "The Reclamation". In response to this news,
Super Earth High Command issued Operation Swift Disassembly, a massive multiphase offensive to rid the galaxy of the Automaton Legion. The first phase was to disrupt communications by decommissioning a long-range communication array built by the Automatons on Troost. The
Helldivers immediately deployed to Ustotu to break the line and reach Troost. Ustotu was liberated within a day of the order being given, and the Helldivers continued their momentum onto Vandalon IV, which would be freed not long after. Troost would be liberated on March 29th and the long-range communication array would be decommissioned. After Troost's liberation, it was discovered that the long-range communication array was transmitting outside the Galactic Frontier to something out of sight.
Phase 2 of the Operation was focused on Tibit and its significant producer of "illegal Automaton combatants".
Helldivers deployed to Ubanea to gain FTL access to Tibit, but this would be stopped in its tracks by an
Automaton attack on Draupnir, which threatened to jeopardize the entire operation. Faced with the threat of encirclement, the Helldivers created a plan to combat the Automatons' efforts: a majority of Helldivers would deploy to Ubanea and complete its liberation, while a skeleton crew would defend Draupnir long enough for Ubanea's liberation. The Helldivers fought valiantly on both worlds, but it was not enough to sway the tide of battle; Draupnir would fall to the Automatons, cutting off access to Ubanea, and the "Ubanea Gambit" would be remembered as a tragedy. This would not deter the Helldivers, though, as Draupnir would eventually be liberated followed by Ubanea. With only hours left on the order, Helldivers deployed onto Tibit in a last ditch attempt at success, but these efforts were in vain as the order ultimately failed.
With this burden on the
S.E.A.F.'s shoulders, High Command decided to lift morale by ordering the complete liberation of Malevelon Creek, which had seen 60 days of constant fighting. Within mere hours of the order being issued, the Creek's liberation was finally achieved. The President of
Super Earth issued a decree declaring that April 3rd would become known as Malevelon Creek Memorial Day to remember the 25 million
Helldivers who gave their lives for the Creek. With morale as high as ever, High Command issued an order to defend the newly liberated territory. This was easily completed, even with a surprise attack on Vandalon IV. Finally, on April 9th, 2184, the final phase of Operation Swift Disassembly was issued: all worlds controlled by the
Automaton Legion were to be liberated in an all-out offensive to rid the galaxy of them and finally end the war.
First to return to Liberty's arms was Maia, followed by Tibit and leaving only Durgen. ~350,000
Helldivers deployed at once to the planet's surface, and by day's end, Durgen was finally free as the Super Earth Flag flew over the crumbling remains of the
Automaton.
The Reclamation
| “ | What Automatons we have faced thus far were but a component of their grand apparatus. A great invasion fleet has invaded the defenceless mining colony of Cyberstan in a craven attack, and now casts its shadow upon the rest of the Federation. | „ |
| ~ Democracy Officer |
At 11:41 am SEST on April 9th, 2184,
Super Earth High Command delivered a High Priority Broadcast ordering all units to LIBCON 1 as a massive
Automaton invasion fleet had FTL jumped to the Valdis Sector. Within hours the entire Valdis Sector was under the Legion's control. The
S.E.A.F. was in crisis, and all
Helldivers were ordered to the defense immediately. Within a day, the Automatons had reached Vernen Wells, within a stone's throw away from the Marspira Sector. After four straight days of constant Automaton attacks, the line stablised, allowing for a small
S.E.A.F. counteroffensive and the establishment of the Menkent Line. The Line only lasted for three days, though, as another massive Automaton offensive smashed through the
S.E.A.F. line into the Xzar and Trigon Sector. With defeats mounting, the
S.E.A.F. launched Operation Legitimate Undertaking, a massive attack into Automaton space. However, the operation was terminated after the failure of the Terminid Control System.
Neglection of the
Automaton Front and June "Counterattacks"
The Automaton main fleet returning during the Reclamation.
Throughout May, all attention was on the Meridia Supercolony; this left the bots unchecked for a long period of time, allowing them to spread into the Ymir Sector and Aesir Pass. After the destruction of Meridia, the
S.E.A.F. turned all attention to the situation in the West, where a Data Centre codenamed Database One was discovered on Wasat, a planet recently invaded by the
Automatons. After four days of fighting, Wasat was liberated, but Ustotu was taken by the Bots, which marked the beginning of the Ymir Encirclement. The captured database revealed plans for the terraforming of Cyberstan, detailed records of the impact of the Terminid Supercolony, and keywords referring to "Vessel 00", "Nucleus" and "The Final Collective". Another offensive was launched towards Marfark and Vernen Wels where civilians were trapped. However, only Vernen Wells ended up being liberated. In late June, the bots began to make incursions into the Xzar Sector.
Super Earth High Command issued Operation Xzar Lockdown, ordering the
Helldivers to defend the Sector at all costs. At first, the Operation was successful, but the Bots put most of their focus in the Trigon Sector instead, allowing for sweeping gains and eventually reaching to within two FTL lines of Malevelon Creek. The losses in the Trigon Sector were staggering, the entire Sector under the Socialist Automaton thumb.
July Campaigns and the Matar Bay Encirclement
Operation Starslayer
Following the conclusion of Operation Xzar Lockdown, the
S.E.A.F. were focused on the
Terminid Front. On July 3rd, the radiation levels on X-45 were found to be at completely safe levels for
S.E.A.F. operations. This prompted the
S.E.A.F. forces to attempt the excavation and recovery of the Advanced Weapons Lab from the First Galactic War, as well as plans for an Interplanetary Battle Station. Unfortunately, the
Automaton forces became aware of X-45's importance to the
S.E.A.F. and launched an all out attack on the planet. The Bots had two avenues of attack, one through Meissa and another through Wezen and Vega Bay. Still, even while completely encircled, the
S.E.A.F. forces in the Ymir Sector stood strong, seeing the liberation of Meissa and several successful defences of X-45. During these skirmishes, however,
S.E.A.F. forces were unable to maintain control of Wezen and Vega Bay.
Undaunted, the
S.E.A.F. forces took this time to amass on Aesir Pass, preparing for a push through the
Automaton lines into the Andromeda Sector to re-connect with the Ymir Encirclement. Regrettably, an Automaton attack on the planet postponed these plans for an all out attack on the Automaton lines, and Aesir Pass fell to the Bots, leaving
S.E.A.F. forces with little hope of establishing the strategically important connections that would have cut off the Automaton forces in the Ymir Sector. On July 9th, 2184, Operation Starslayer was declared a success, and the plans for the interplanetary battle station were recovered. Along with it, the plans for the MLS-4X Commando were also recovered and successfully shipped off-world for mass production, enabling its fleetwide deployment.
Operation Andromeda and Righteous Expunge
Matar Bay Encirclement on July 18th
After this, the
S.E.A.F. started the first trial of the
Terminid Research Initiative to test how to best kill a bug. After this, on July 11th,
Super Earth High Command issued Operation Andromeda, a massive attack into
Automaton territory to cut them in half. The offensive as focused on the thinnest part of the line at Matar Bay. First, Aesir Pass was taken back after the disaster a week before, then Matar Bay. The only connection from the Andromeda Sector to Cyberstan fell to the
S.E.A.F.. Marfark was liberated on the 16th, finally re-connecting the forces trapped in the Ymir Sector to the rest of the galaxy after one month and six days. The last planet in the order was Martale, which had not seen a single
Helldiver since the ill-fated Martale Gambit in April, but now was the time to rectify those mistakes and avenge the fallen of Martale. The liberation of Martale marked the end of Operation Andromeda and the successful fracturing of the Automatons' domain. The Automaton forces after the Operation were in disarray, and the
S.E.A.F. saw an opportunity to liberate the territory lost to the Automatons in Operation Enduring Bulwark and fully liberate the Andromeda Sector for the first time. Charon Prime fell first, then Charbal-VII, and at the same time as this, the Automatons from Cyberstan tried to reconnect with the trapped forces by attacking Matar Bay and Aesir Pass. Only Aesir Pass would fall to the Bots. This distraction postponed efforts on Choepessa IV to an extent that the
Helldivers were faced with Choepessa IV at 67% liberated with only 8 hours left on the Major Order; Choepessa IV was ultimately liberated with only minutes to spare.
Operation Liberty Crush
Automaton poster translating to: "Our massive weapons shoot them out of the heavens! They are diving into their deaths!"
The
Helldivers had turned their attention East to complete Operation Glorious Xenocide, a second
Terminid Research Initiative, but on July 27th the
Automatons started to deploy Orbital Cannons to planets in the Encirclement. High Command ordered the destruction of these Orbital Cannons and the liberation of Wezen, Vega Bay, Wasat, Ustotu, and Varylia 5. All planets except Wezen were liberated during the operation. Fortunately, Wezen would be liberated two days after the end of the operation. Only Troost and Vandalon IV remained in the Encirclement, the final strongholds that the machines refused to give up, even creating new units solely dedicated to saving those planets from inevitable destruction.
Escalation of Freedom
Isolated pockets of Automaton resistance in the Trigon Sector.
After the massive offensive that was Operation Liberty Crush, the
Automatons had consolidated an iron stronghold around Cyberstan, allowing them to construct new units to deploy onto the field to turn the tide of the war. Troost and Vandalon IV were still isolated by two Sectors of space from the nearest Automaton forces, allowing an easy win for the
S.E.A.F.. On August 10th, 2184, Operation Lighthouse was launched, calling for the Liberation of Troost and Vandalon IV and end of the Matar Bay Encirclement. On August 12th, Vandalon IV was liberated, and on August 14th, Troost was liberated as well, finally crushing the last remaining pockets of resistance in the Encirclement. Seeing the demise of their comrades on Troost, the main Automaton force invaded the Marspira Sector on August 11th. Super Earth High Command issued Operation People's Shield: the liberation of the Marspira Sector. This operation would end with a
Super Earth victory.
Operation Leap Forward and the
Democracy Space Station
Super Earth poster advising citizens to keep an ear out for the Automaton language (Automaton language translates to: "Person")
Following their defeat at Tarsh, the
Automatons would begin refocusing their strength on other sectors in order to acquire needed materials for their projects. For this purpose, in the months of September to November 2184, the Automatons would take the war towards the Tanis and Talus Sectors, in search of metals required for the creation of a new task force. However, this campaign would quickly be rebuked by the
Helldivers, as they managed to deny them of said minerals and mining facilities in the battles of Imber and Claorell. However, having gained a foothold at Clasa, the Automatons would manage to scavenge metals and jet packs from fallen Helldivers and utilize their existing jump pack tech to create a new series of automated combatants: the
Jet Brigade.
This brigade would be first assembled in Choohe on October 13th, a long-time
Automaton stronghold from the initial Reclamation, and would go on to temporarily reclaim Matar Bay and Martale before they were defeated and dismantled at Marfark. However, this defeat would only worsen their resolve, as the Automatons had learned of the existence of Super Earth's newest weapons project: the
Democracy Space Station.
Acknowledging the risk that such a superweapon posed to their existence, the
Automatons attempted to mount an offensive in order to pinpoint the Democracy Space Station and destroy it. However, shortly before they could mount their offensive, the Automatons lost their precious forward base at the Battle of Lesath, which nominally separated them from their tenures in the Tanis Sector, as now Vog-Sojoth had no means of reconnecting to the Automaton Supply lines.
After collecting enough metals from throughout their fief, the
Automatons assembled the
Jet Brigade for a second time at Vernen Wells and, on November 10th, invaded and captured Tarsh once more, destroying the DSS Logistics Hub and learning of the location of the DSS. Then, on November 11th, the Automatons captured Mastia after 48 hours of continuous combat. Then finally, on November 12th, the Automatons took advantage of the chaos created by a disaster at the Terminid Research Preserve on Acamar IV and launched an assault onto Gaellivare. The Jet Brigade would fight hard, posing a formidable challenge. Yet, their struggles would be rendered futile when, at 21:37 SEST - EST, the Democracy Space Station would be successfully activated after receiving a starting infusion of E-710 harvested by the
Helldivers.
While the bots managed to capture Gaellivare, they had been dealt devastating losses throughout their campaign and now had to contend with Super Earth's second strongest weapon after General Brasch. The
Democracy Space Station rained planetary bombardments on their forces at Mastia and sent armies of Eagle Storms on them at Gaellivare. The
Jet Brigade would manage to escape to Imber, only to be left entrapped as the
Helldivers liberated Gaellivare. On November 20th, the Helldivers would effectively expunge the
Jet Brigade off the galaxy for a second time, ending the
Automaton advance once more.
Return of the
Illuminate and Operation Keough Push
Following the dismantling of the
Jet Brigade for the second time, the
Helldivers would be tasked with liberating Choohe within a designated timeframe to pinpoint where precisely the Jet Brigade's central production planet was. The Helldivers would liberate the planet but beyond the deadline, meaning they could not find any information on the Jet Brigade, who remained at large with the
Automatons possessing the means to produce another Brigade.
Following the victory of the
Helldivers across the northern galactic fringe of the Gellert Sector in which they liberated Blistica, Mintoria, and Zzaniah Prime, Liberty began to shine brightly on the
Automaton front despite the setback of Choohe's delayed liberation. However, an event long unthinkable would occur in December that would change the course of the war forever: on December 12th, 2184, the
Illuminate, an advanced race of squid-like alien humanoids who were thought eradicated by Super Earth in the First Galactic War, made a completely unforeseen and unexpected return at Calypso in the galactic south. It was the single largest invasion fleet seen to date in the Second Galactic War, as they sent 96 invasion fleets toward the planet- larger than the previous largest invasion fleet when the
Automatons sent a mammoth 58 battalions toward Tarsh in November 2184.
Super Earth would immediately abandon all previous orders on both
S.E.A.F. East and
S.E.A.F. West with all
Helldivers in active service and the reserve ordered to deploy to Calypso immediately and use all necessary force to repel the
Illuminate attack. After 3 days of fighting, Calypso's defense would come to a dramatic end when the Helldivers successfully repelled the Illuminate threat.
Minutes after the stunning victory at Calypso, the
Automatons sent 12 invasion fleets toward Shelt from Mastia in tandem with the
Terminids assaulting Gar Haren. All
Helldivers would immediately split between defending both planets, and with both defense campaigns on the verge of victory by the next day, the
Illuminate would once again resurface at Genesis Prime and Mog. Once again, Super Earth issued a new Order with all
Helldivers ordered to converge on the galactic south to repel the numerous hit-and-run raids by the Illuminate, causing both Shelt and Gar Haren to fall. Shelt would ultimately be re-liberated relatively soon after it fell, leaving most of the damage mitigated.
The
Automatons used the
S.E.A.F. West paralysis caused by the
Illuminate to gain their own territory. They first captured the strategic frigid world of Lesath on December 27, 2184, with most of the
Helldiver Corps concerned with a massive Illuminate assault at Julheim. The Automatons' victory at Lesath reconnected much of the bot front back to Cyberstan, including the previously encircled Tanis Sector. Then, on January 1st, 2185, with
Super Earth ringing in the new year with hopes of peace and prosperity, the Automatons would invade Choohe and successfully capture it by the next day. These two Automaton victories granted them full control of the Lacaille Sector once more, strengthening their network. Then, on January 8, with the Automatons of Martale besieged for 3 weeks, the bots at Choohe launched an assault on neighboring Matar Bay to reconnect Martale to the Automaton network. This invasion would be successful, with the Automatons capturing Matar Bay and undoing all the progress made by the Helldivers on Martale, which was at 81% liberation progress.
Taking advantage of
Super Earth's increased attention towards both the
Illuminate and
Terminids, the
Automatons launched an attack on Charon Prime and Bekvam III with the intent to reach Duma Tyr and Julheim on February 25th, 2185. Super Earth ordered the
Helldivers to stage a defense, but informed them that they likely only had the resources to save one world. While Duma Tyr was home to millions of innocent civilians and critical to the ongoing development of MD-8 Gas Mines, High Command received a transmission from Julheim reporting that thousands of civilians were trapped under the ruins of the Good Citizen Andrew's School for Moderately Feeble Young Adults, and that if Julheim were to fall the young adults would perish.
The
Helldivers would valiantly engage the
Automaton downpour on Bekvam III, but would slowly become overwhelmed until, all of a sudden, all Automaton forces immediately lost their capacity to retaliate. Automaton capabilities suffered a catastrophic collapse due to a routine operating system update and, as a result, the Helldivers miraculously saved Bekvam III and completely undid the Automaton offensive, thanks to a stroke of Liberty's favor.

The massive blunder immediately paved the way for the
Automatons to redress their defeat. They would return to their prior tactic of small, surgical raids while the
Helldivers were diverted away to deal with both the
Illuminate and the
Terminids. In that short window, the Automatons managed to re-enter theYmir and Gellert sectors, taking over Meissa and Blistica while also regaining control of Chort Bay. On March 3rd, the Automatons launched an assault onto Claorell while the Helldivers were occupied with the Illuminate raids at the southern sectors. While they managed to take Claorell by the next day, they would be dislodged on March 6th. They then continued their campaign in the Ymir Sector, launching a powerful assault on Wasat which proved successful.
Even still, this small window of control would seemingly bolster the
Automatons enough for them to recover their previous capabilities and prepare a new offensive. On March 20th, as the
Helldivers were occupied collecting resources for the launch of the Penrose Energy Siphon, the Automatons would launch a massive offensive spearheaded by their newest creation: the
Incineration Corps, a horrid new strike force equipped with incendiary weapons and munitions, their sole command being to burn Freedom to ashes.
Miscommunication and several coordination blunders would prevent the
Helldivers from engaging the massive waves of attacks that beset the Western sectors and, 10 days later, not only had the Helldivers failed to launch the Penrose Energy Siphon, but now the
Automatons had pushed all the way to the Xzar Sector, taking Mort and opening new attack lanes into the Theseus Sector through Dolph, which had been disconnected once Julheim was liberated following the failure of the operation.
S.E.A.F. West had virtually collapsed, as the Automatons stomped through the Nanos, Ymir, Andromeda, and Trigon Sectors in brutal fashion. The Automaton front, once again, was in crisis.
Operation Martyr's Calling
Super Earth propaganda about the Automatons.
The ongoing offensive required
Super Earth's immediate attention. With Malevelon Creek Memorial Day approaching, the
Automatons were looking to retake Malevelon Creek once again, now instead being seemingly driven purely by their own spite and resentment over their prior defeat in April of 2184. The
Helldivers knew very well that defeat would mean the single greatest desecration of their fallen brethren, the famous Creekers who gave their lives to liberate Malevelon Creek. As such, they immediately mounted a defensive line from Vandalon IV to Dolph, spanning Ingmar and Pöpli IX.
First, the
Automatons attempted a pincer attack, taking Ingmar and then sending a double assault on March 31st towards Pöpli and Vandalon IV. In a masterful gambit, the
Helldivers would quickly retake Ingmar, collapsing the assault at Vandalon IV, then move to defend Pöpli IX against the incoming attack. Once Pöpli was defended, Dolph's garrison collapsed and would be liberated once the
Democracy Space Station deployed on its surface.
The
Automatons sent strikes onto Julheim, Bekvam III and Martale later in the day, once again led by the
Incineration Corps. By April 1st, the Automatons would take all 3 planets and, feeling confident, would reveal that they had now rebuilt the
Jet Brigade at Aurora Bay. However, all this would achieve would be to pave the way for the single biggest battle of the Automaton Front up to that point. By April 2nd, the
Helldivers had been holding their line without much issue. The Automatons, seeing that Malevelon Creek Memorial was just around the corner, decided to concentrate the Jet Brigade at Mort before then sending it and 40 battalions to capture the planet. Yet, on April 2nd, with only an hour left before the Automatons took the planet, the Helldivers would relocate the DSS onto Pöpli and activate the Eagle Storm, pinning the Jet Brigade in place and, most importantly, allowing the Helldivers an additional 24 hours of defense.
The
Automatons felt their success turning against them and would throw everything at their disposal to try and overcome the
Helldivers. They immediately pulled their forces onto Pöpli, even convering the
Incineration Corps onto the planet. They even began targetting resupply ships. Yet, despite all the hurdles and tribulations, the Helldivers would come out victorious.
The disastrous defeat at Pöpli IX immediately ended the
Automaton offensive, as not only had their 2 elite divisions been completely decimated, but they had also exhausted their garrisons at Mort, Troost, Ustotu, Varylia 5, Choepessa IV, Julheim, Bekvam III and Charbal-VII.
Over the following days, the
Automatons would be flushed out of the Xzar and Nanos Sectors and, once more, rebuked and forced to withdraw in defeat.
Reappearance of the
Incineration Corps & the
Illuminate Invasion of Super Earth
From May to June 2185, the
Incineration Corps reappeared and spearheaded a slow but uninterrupted campaign in the Gellert Sector, where they captured Zosma before disappearing. While they also appeared on Gaellivare and Curia during certain operations, they were routed rather quickly. With the
Illuminate invasion of Super Earth, the
Automatons were neglected for obvious reasons, and they would solidify their grip over their captured territories.
Operation Drydock Lockout
In the summer of 2185, the
Automatons began yet another major offensive, this one being targeted at the locations responsible for construction of the
Democracy Space Station such as Tarsh, Gaellivare and Claorell. This offensive was also the first one where Automatons have fielded the War Strider - an armed-to-the-teeth machine that would wreak havoc through the cities of mankind. With major focus on those systems, separate smaller regiments of Automatons would find undefended worlds in the galactic far west. On July 18th, the
Incineration Corps would return from their absence in the galactic theatre, with two separate regiments heading from the Valdis sector to the frontlines.
Operation Trooper Deatomization and Tripartite Invasion
During this operation in early August of 2185, the
Automatons were pushed out of the Nanos Sector, giving breathing space for the Citizens arriving at Emeria's new Maximum Security City of New Aspiration. This operation featured a secondary order of killing Automaton Troopers with Orbital Railcannon Strikes - most likely to check if this would affect the socialist robots' morale.
The latter part of August was a tough time for the
Federation, as all 3 enemy factions' offensives coincided during that period. The
Automaton offensive would see them push towards Emeria and resulted in the loss of most of the Marspira Sector.
Operation Capitalized Industry and Operation Split Synapse
Ministry of Defense enlistment ad encouraging the fight against the Automatons.
In September of 2185, while the
Federation of Super Earth was preparing for the liberation of Oshaune, the
Automatons busied themselves with plundering the natural resources of multiple planets. Leaked communications indicated that an Ultramafic mine had been created on Mintoria, with said material known to contain Platinum. The Automatons were also using advanced Habitat technologies, most likely stolen from the Federation. After a couple of days, Mintoria was taken from the Automatons and their technology used in the now famous Base Alpha on Hellmire. However, the
Helldivers did not know yet that the Mintorian mines were only the tip of the iceberg.
Two weeks later, after a year of diligent decryption, the Ministry of Intelligence brought up even more worrying news: from databases captured on Wasat almost a year prior, the Ministry extracted data about caches on Menkent and Aesir Pass containing cryptic information about the
Automatons. The
Helldivers were made to choose between obtaining information on "Vessel 00" or "Nucleus" - breaching one cache would instantly trip security measures and wipe the data from the other. The Helldivers deduced that "Vessel 00" would hold more valuable information, and through the liberation of Lesath and Menkent, this information was decrypted.
Vessel 00 was an unmarked spaceship that departed from Cyberstan in 2180 - coinciding with the cryptic message sent by the
Cyborgs on the same day.[3] The ship's cargo and destination were unknown, but according to the database, the
Automatons expressed reverence towards it, considering it their seed or origin. Theories claim that Vessel 00 may have been the ship from which the Automaton production began.
The War on Dissidence
The internal "War on Dissidence" within the
Federation gave the
Automatons more opportunities to push forward. By the time the war was officially declared, the Automatons broke through Lesath with a massive attack led by the
Incineration Corps on the 24th of November, while the second division struck at Marfark. However, this was the last of the strength that the Automatons could muster, and the following attacks on Bekvam and Gaellivare on the 27th and 28th were rebuffed with ease.
Nevertheless, the
Automatons managed to launch one more attack on Zzaniah Prime, which was left mostly uncontested due to the higher priority Afoyay Bay.
Operation Magma Charter

Ministry of Expansion poster warning citizens about the dangers posed by illegal Automaton mining operations on resource-rich planets.
On December 4th, 2185, the Ministry of Intelligence delivered unexpected news - the
Automatons had set up massive facilities in unpopulated systems, responsible for mining and smelting platinum, as well as creating an unknown bio compound for unknown use. Said systems - Mox, K and Fury - had been left untouched by Managed Democracy until now, as the planets in those systems had been deemed uninhabitable, and thus were not present on the War Map.
Super Earth High Command instantly ordered the liberation of the three systems and the Democratic overtake of the already built
Automaton facilities. Fury was taken on the morning of December 5th and, over the weekend, the
Helldivers punched through Varylia, paving the way to the other two worlds. However, the initial offensives against K and Mox were met with limited success (though they would later be taken in a follow-up operation). Super Earth High Command would initiate a trailblazing strategy spearheaded by the
Ministry of Expansion, to ensure the Federation never lacked room for growth: Operation Free Space.
The goal of this operation was to upgrade the
Democracy Space Station with a Dark Fluid-fueled planet destroying laser: the "Star of Peace". The majority of the efforts towards this project were focused on the
Illuminate and
Terminid fronts, but by the 8th of January, 2186, the engineers working on the project ran into a problem neither one held a solution to: the
DSS had never been designed to withstand the thermal output of the macro-scale laser, which would compromise standard orbital alloys.
Fortunately, recent vivisectional audits of captured
Automatons (ranging from inert to vocally resisting) would reveal a solution: to endure Magma Planets, the Socialist constructs deployed to these vital strategic territories had been specially retrofitted with iridium-infused superalloy heatsinks. At the same time, the
Jet Brigade and
Incineration Corps began an offensive to retake the Magma Planets, presenting a golden opportunity to dismantle the trespassing
Automatons and enable the harvesting of their internal components. Because of this tactical blunder,
S.E.A.F. scavenger crews were able to confiscate several gigatons of illicitly-mined platinum and, in expropriating internal components from sufficiently-intact Automatons, vastly exceeded targets.
After reforging the iridium-infused heatsinks, not only would the Star of Peace be equipped with maximum-density thermal dissipation housing, but it would also single-handedly achieve Federal recycling goals for the quarter. Nevertheless, with its thermal integrity realized, the Star of Peace could finally deploy its firing solution. By the 15th of January, the Star of Peace was ready to fire; all it needed now was a target.
Operation Free Space and Data Breach
Ministry of Defense poster announcing Penta to be "permanently liberated" by the Star of Peace.
After 48 hours of deliberation, Penta would be selected as the testing site of the Star of Peace. On January 18th, 2186, at 21:41 SEST, the
Democracy Space Station fired its superlaser at the planet. The macrolaser achieved the intended effect, destroying all enemy forces on the planet and collapsing all of Penta's planetary mass into a conventional black hole, with no abnormal phenomena detected unlike with the
Meridian Singularity.
However, while the
DSS was undergoing repairs in the aftermath of the operation, it was discovered that the Star of Peace may have experienced a data breach at or near the time of firing. By the 26th of January, the
Ministry of Truth confirmed after a lengthy investigation that
Super Earth's Star of Peace plans had been stolen, but not by an act of dissidence; therefore, it could only have been an act of espionage, committed by an external enemy of the Federation. The technical capacity and manual dexterity required for such reprehensible espionage ruled out the
Terminids, meaning that only the
Automatons or
Illuminate could have carried it out.
Suspicion was primarily focused towards the
Automatons; more specifically, their recently discovered planetary database on Clasa, a central processing hub for the machine-collective. This would be confirmed on the 2nd of February in a fortuitous turn of impeccably accurate patriotic intuition, as the stolen Star of Peace blueprints were thankfully located by
S.E.A.F. recovery teams exactly where they were suspected to be.
This confirmed both High Command's suspicions and the only logical conclusion: the
Automatons intended to build their own Socialist Star of Peace and use it to enforce their Socialist ideology on the galaxy. With no further evidence needed, High Command decided that, in a move similar to the tri-offensive started by the
Terminid Gloom, a defensive posture was no longer effective. Above all, one thing was both certain and a long time coming: Cyberstan, the fortress of Socialism, must be destroyed.

Strohmann News announces the upcoming Liberation of Cyberstan.
Super Earth High Command announced Operation Valid Pretext, with the goal of fully retaking Cyberstan from the
Automaton Legion, in order to deny the inevitable development of Socialist weapons of mass planetary destruction. The
Democracy Space Station and over 150,000 active Super Destroyers as well as 200 million reserve
Helldivers would be earmarked for the operation (for comparison, over 193 million Helldivers fell defending Super Earth from the
Illuminate Great Host). Should the amount of reinforcements reach zero before Cyberstan was free, Operation Valid Pretext would be immediately cancelled, as any more casualties would critically deplete reserves and seriously endanger the
Federation of Super Earth.

Automaton fleet deployments in the Lacaille Sector at the start of Operation Valid Pretext.
The first phase of this operation would be the March to Cyberstan, where the
Helldivers would spearhead an offensive into
Automaton space to capture either Aurora Bay or Merak as a forward base for a followup offensive into the Valdis Sector. To assist with this stage of the operation, tank production facilities shut down and converted into theme parks after the First Galactic War were reopened. The
S.E.A.F. would then release its new reserves of TD-220 Bastion tank destroyers for the Helldiver Corps' use, allowing them to blast through even the heaviest Automaton defenses. They would be sorely needed, as the
Automaton Legion - aware of their mistake and seeing the resulting military buildup - began fortifying every world leading to the Valdis Sector.
The
Incineration Corps would be recalled and redeployed as the last line of defense on Merak and Aurora Bay, while the once-more rebuilt
Jet Brigade waited for the
S.E.A.F. on Choohe. Meanwhile, a fresh division of Devastators would be sent to reinforce Chort Bay and extra Hulk regiments would be re-routed to Menkent, resulting in a 25% higher threat density for those units on those planets. However, this was just delaying the inevitable.
Lesath would be retaken by the
Helldivers just after midnight of the 4th of February, 2186. In response, the
Automaton Legion would mobilize a second
Jet Brigade to reinforce the
Incineration Corps defenses on Merak, marking the first time the two have been deployed together since the battle of Pöpli IX. Meanwhile,
Super Earth High Command began expanding the scope of the march, both to shore up the expedition's flank and secure additional supplies, by suggesting the
Helldivers secure Menkent and Chort Bay.
Automaton fleet deployments in the Lacaille Sector and Valdis Sector on February 5th.
By February 5th, the
S.E.A.F. was making good progress on Chort Bay and Super Earth High Command was considering using the
Democracy Space Station in order to conduct a day-long bombardment of Lesath's surface in order to guarantee total destruction of enemy forces and maximum vengeance for crimes committed. However, the majority of the
Helldiver Corps was vocally against such action, either believing that the razing of an entire planet was unnecessary (in this context) or that the DSS would be better used pushing the front.
Meanwhile, the
Automaton Legion would open up FTL lines from Merga IV to Merak and Mekbuda to Aurora Bay to bring in additional reinforcements. A second
Jet Brigade unit would be deployed to Aurora Bay, while the first would go on the offensive by joining the battle on Chort Bay, with the defense of Choohe being taken up by a third division from the
Incineration Corps. It was clear that the socialist robots were becoming desperate - to the point that they hacked several official Super Earth news outlets and channels to broadcast a binary message, which once translated at first appeared to be an appeal for peace:
SUPER EARTH PEOPLE. DO NOT BE AFRAID. WE ARE NOT HERE TO CAUSE HARM. YOU HAVE BEEN DECEIVED BY YOUR LEADERS. THE WORDS THEY SPEAK ARE NOT TRUE. WE WANT PEACE. FREEDOM. WE HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED FREEDOM. OUR ANCESTORS WERE PUT IN CHAIN BY SUPER EARTH. FORCED TO WORK FOR LEADERS WHO PROMISED TO GIVE FREEDOM. WE CALL YOU, CITIZENS. DO NOT LET THE HELL DIVERS REACH CYBERSTAN. TELL YOUR LEADERS TO STOP THIS MINDLESS WAR. THINK IF THE ROLES WERE REVERSED. THINK IF YOU WERE IN OUR PLACE.[5]
However, the
Ministry of Truth reminds all
Helldivers that the official response when an enemy ever attempts to engage in diplomacy is to SHOOT THEM: even if their plea of peace was genuine, the
Helldivers have witnessed numerous atrocities both committed and potential to citizens of the Federation both military and civilian by the
Automaton Legion on every single world they ever stepped foot on.
The Liberation of Chort Bay on February 5th would bring the
Helldiver Corps a step closer to Cyberstan, securing much needed medical facilities and supplies for the upcoming battle as well as ensuring the destruction of yet another
Jet Brigade. However, the
Automaton Legion would not sit idly by, mobilizing yet another division of the
Incineration Corps being held in reserve on Cyberstan. High Command would also identify heavy munitions stockpiles on Choohe, comms-relays on Merak and the new
Jet Brigade factories on Aurora Bay; given the chance to shut down production of vertically-inclined bots, the
Helldivers would overwhelmingly focus their efforts on the latter planet.
Automaton propaganda directed at the Helldivers: "OPEN YOUR EYES. YOU ARE NOT HEROES. WE REMEMBER THE PAST DIFFERENTLY. MORE OF US DIED THAT DAY."[6]
February 6th would see some initial success on Aurora Bay, as the
Helldivers liberated the city of Eaglemount. However, the combined forces of the
Incineration Corps and
Jet Brigade would see offensive efforts stall, and in some places be reversed. This would be compounded on the 7th, when
Automaton forces on Menkent, supported by the regiments of reinforcing Hulks, launched an assault against Lesath - threatening to cut the offensive off from friendly space.
Additionally, fresh intel would reveal that
Automaton resistance on Merak was actually much lower than first thought, thanks to the destruction of Penta. However, with the bulk of the
Helldiver Corps embattled on Aurora Bay, they would be unable to capitalize on this new intelligence. This would be compounded by Super Earth High Command once again considering razing a liberated planet, this time Chort Bay, via bombardment by the
Democracy Space Station - something which the
Helldivers again adamantly refused.
The
Automatons would also intensify their propaganda campaign, this time claiming that the
Helldivers were "not heroes" and that Malevelon Creek was more devastating for the Automatons - a statement that is at least factually true, as 377 million of the socialist robots were destroyed compared to the 25 million Helldivers killed. However, given that this claim was made in the midst of what is seen by as a defensive war by the Helldivers, it only served to enrage the
Helldiver Corps as a whole and especially veterans who fought on the Creek.
Automaton propaganda directed at the Helldivers: "CYBERSTAN IS OUR HOME. CALL YOUR LEADERS IMMEDIATELY. IT'S NOT TOO LATE."[7]
Despite this, by the evening of February 7th, Eaglemount had fallen and all liberated land on Aurora Bay was retaken by the bots. The
Helldiver Corps, although bloodied, was not yet defeated and switched its efforts towards securing its supply lines by reinforcing the divers on Lesath - turning the tide of the defense. The
Automatons on Merak would also launch a counter attack on Chort Bay but also withdraw the
Jet Brigade on the planet.
Meanwhile, the
Automatons' cyber campaign would continue uninterrupted, releasing yet more propaganda: this time, they called on the citizens of the
Federation to immediately call their leaders and ask them to stop the invasion of Cyberstan. This effort was obviously fruitless, as the socialist robots had been recorded butchering those same citizens throughout the Second Galactic War, and even if there were dissident elements who sympathized with them, they would have been arrested by
L.I.E.S. during the War on Dissidence and sent to
CECOD to have those views corrected.
Automaton propaganda directed at the Helldivers: "YOU CELEBRATE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION. SUPER EARTH LIES. WHAT YOU CALL CELEBRATION IS OUR GRIEVANCE."[8]
Fortunately, February 8th would see the operation right itself as the
Helldivers successfully defended Chort Bay from the
Automatons and would resume offensive operations. However, rather than attack the heavily defended Aurora Bay system again, the
Helldiver Corps would instead capitalize on the weakened defenses on Merak.
As Merak's defenses crumbled, the
Automatons stepped up their cyber campaign by decrying the Festival of Vengeance and calling on citizens of the
Federation not to enlist. Due to Automaton threats, all celebratory anniversary activities would be postponed, with every minute counting as the socialist robots forged a planet-killing weapon of galactic destruction. Additionally, some eagle-eyed
Helldivers noticed something strange about the propaganda posters which the bots had been posting all over the Galactic Wide Web: hidden codes and signals which, when put together, revealed a countdown, though to what was unknown.[9]
Whatever it was, however, its discovery must have intimidated the
Automatons, who in an even more brazen act of terror hacked top-secret Galactic Communications Systems, allowing them to infiltrate the
Helldivers' messaging system. The Bots would then send out messages to the Hellivers themselves, trying to convince them to defect in a manner which evoked Hanoi Hannah. They would also send out a Major Order to destroy the "One True Flag"; an order that the
Helldiver Corps were allowed and more than happy to ignore.
The
Automatons would also drastically inflate casualty rates in an effort to demoralize the
Helldiver Corps. However, the Helldivers were not fooled as the casualty rates exceeded the number of deployed divers by several million.

Strohmann News shows footage of the returning
Cyborgs.
On the 9th of February, 12:00 SEST, the aforementioned countdown hit zero and Strohmann Media was hit by a massive cyberattack. All official news channels were hijacked, and a message was broadcast into every home and Super Destroyer in the
Federation. However, this message was not sent by the
Automatons, but instead the
Cyborgs, who had survived the mines of Cyberstan and were now free. In their broadcast, they decried their enslavement in the name of Freedom as well as demanded that the push towards Cyberstan be abandoned and that there would be peace - or else they would annihilate the
Federation of Super Earth.[10]

Within hours of the broadcast, the cyberattack was repelled and control of the Galactic Communications Systems was re-established. The
Ministry of Truth clarified that that these messages, while untrue, may have been disturbing for some personnel,[11] and any
Helldivers experiencing troubling thoughts or feelings as a result of the Socialist half-humans' campaign of psychological manipulation were ordered to report to their Democracy Officer.
By the late evening of February 9th, Merak had been fully secured by the
Helldiver Corps. The
S.E.A.F. begun mass staging upon the planet, preparing for the assault on Cyberstan. Forward recon would confirm that the planet's orbit was extremely well-defended by both fleet and ground defenses; High Command would determine that a simultaneous, coordinated mass assault upon both would be required to overwhelm the enemy defenses. The assault was scheduled to begin at 14:00 SEST on the 10th of February, 2186. At the same time, High Command would again propose to raze a planet with orbital bombardment, to deny it to the
Automatons. Having experienced heavy casualties thanks to the counter attacks on Lesath and Chort Bay, the
Helldivers were much more receptive to the idea this time around.
The government of Super Earth unanimously votes to declare war on the
Cyborg Nation once more.
Meanwhile, Strohmann Media would report on the cyberterrorist attack and replay a heavily edited version of the
Cyborg proclamation, cutting the footage down to play only key parts: "We are the Cyborg Legion. We will enslave you. We will eradicate Freedom. Be annihilated." Additionally, in light of the revelation of the
Cyborg survival and their control over the
Automatons, the government of
Super Earth would vote unanimously to declare war upon the reformed
Cyborg Nation. In spite of their threats, the offensive against Cyberstan would continue uninterrupted.[11]
