The Cyborg Vox Engine is a large
Automaton war machine. It is heavily armed with two battle cannons, two laser gatling guns and a pair of rocket barrage pods. Vox Engines are the ultimate symbol and the final wall of the reformed
Cyberstan Collective.
Anatomy
A Cyborg Vox Engine on the battlefield.
Cyborg Vox Engines are comprised of two segments: a four-tracked driving unit, and a tall main chassis, which on its top contains the command pod where the Cyborg controlling the machine is located. Unfortunately, the head is easily the most armored part of the body (21,000 HP vs 11,000 for the main body), so taking out the pilot is not a quick way to bring it down.
The Vox Engine's main weapons are a pair of heavily modified twin-linked laser cannons, similar to those mounted on the Annihilator battle tank and the Factory Strider. Supplementing this firepower are a pair of Guided Rocket pods mounted behind its "shoulders", and two Fusion Gatling Laser Guns mounted on either side of the vehicle, designed to give close-in protection from flanking
S.E.A.F. infantry and
Helldivers.
Its front is heavily armored, and it can take a massive amount of punishment. However, its back and underside hide sets of radiators that can be destroyed by anything with Light Armor Penetration. Destroying them forces the Vox Engine to open what is assumed to be its emergency cooling system, a pair of vents which are the perfect targets to toss a grenade into. Even a non-lethal stun or smoke grenade, or even a well tossed G/SH-39 Shield, will be enough to cause an internal chain reaction which destroys the entire machine.
Behavior
Vox Engines operate similarly to
Automaton battle tanks, except larger and possessing significantly more firepower. Due to their sheer size, they can tower above most Automaton bases, even from outside, but this prevents them from chasing
Helldivers through small alleys between buildings.
If the pilot knows a
Helldiver is hiding behind cover but can't get to them with its main weapons or is out of range, they will launch a barrage of deadly Icarus Rockets to flush them out. These missiles are both deadly and accurate, with the only warning a Helldiver has before they land being a yellow glow on the ground. Under a sustained barrage, they WILL force their target to flee or engage the Vox Engine directly.
When the Engine is destroyed, the pod containing its pilot is ejected into the sky. While not confirmed yet, this pod has tendencies to target the
Helldiver that destroyed the machine, in some strange attempt at "revenge from the grave" which has claimed the lives of countless heroes.
Tactics
- The primary way to take down a Vox Engine is by damaging the three, distinct, glowing yellow vents found at the top or bottom; doing so will force an emergency hatch to open, exposing its core. Throwing a grenade into this hatch will destroy the Vox Engine from the inside. This works with any grenade, regardless of damage or Demo Force (including non-lethals), but does not work with other explosive weapons.
- Each vent can be damaged via light penetration damage, and each one destroyed deals 700 damage to its main health pool, so its a decent way to chip away at its health if you have no other ways to help destroy it.
- If the Helldiver plans on getting close, it is strongly advised to destroy the gatling guns on its sides, as this will make flanking the Vox Engine much safer.
- The Engine's cannons can fire downwards and can still damage and kill Helldivers directly underneath it via explosive damage. Additionally, it is important to be aware of nearby enemies, as they won't stand by and let them be destroyed.
- Due to the high durable damage of the Vox Engine's missiles, it is not recommended using vehicles to attack it as they can be destroyed very quickly. The TD-220 Bastion can destroy a Vox if it is properly positioned and gets the jump on it, but sustained engagements are not advised.
- One very quick way to destroy the Vox Engine is to plant 3 C4 charges on its upper torso, though this will require getting within medium to short range of the vehicle. Fortunately, the narrow streets and factory complexes of the Megafactories make this much easier to accomplish.
- When the Vox Engine explodes, some of the broken pieces will be launched into the air; these pieces (most notoriously the head/cockpit) can then fall down onto Helldivers, killing them.
- If struggling, employ the ‘If you can’t beat them, join them’ strategy, which involves deploying an HMG emplacement on top of their head.
- Alternatively, use the ‘Joestar secret technique’, as there is no shame in running away at full speed to escape a seemingly hopeless battle. Vox Engines are fairly slow and the narrow streets and buildings of Megafactories can provide plenty of escape routes -- assuming you're not already surrounded.
- The main cannons of the Vox Engine possess demolition force 50, meaning that they can be potentially baited into destroying hardened objectives such as Stratagem Jammers.
Trivia
- When a Vox Engine is destroyed, a pod can be seen ejecting out of the top of the tank. Upon further investigation one can find the dead body of the war machine's pilot inside.
- The Vox Engine may be an upgraded version of the Siege Mech found in Helldivers 1. They share similar body layouts and armaments, though majorly overhauled for massive destruction.
- Like its predecessor, the Vox Engine resembles the HK-Tank type Hunter-Killers from the original Terminator films.
