| “ | A crude simulation of military leadership, the Commissar is augmented with slightly faster processing and a crude command subroutine. The Commissar stays out of combat if possible, as despicably cowardly as it is unequivocally non-sentient. | „ |

Behavior
Commissars are typically seen as the "commanders" of the
Automaton forces. During Patrols, if a Commissar detects an activity of hostile
Helldivers, their immediate response is to sprint towards the location to investigate. Upon confirming a Helldiver's sighting, the Commissar's first response is to fire its pistol at its target before leading its troops to attack. They can also use their bladed arm at close range. Perhaps the most important aspect of the Commissar is their responsibility in summoning reinforcements via a Bot Drop, which calls forth Dropships to deploy Automaton forces. They may also lob a high-explosive grenade whenever their target is hiding behind cover.
Like the Troopers, Commissars are also able to man turrets located on Automaton Outposts.
Tactics
- The Commissar is a unique bot that calls in bot drops as a first action (other infantry are also capable of calling in bot drops).
Helldivers are advised to keep their eyes sharp and gun down the Commissars before they can launch their signal flares, especially on higher-difficulty missions where Bot Drops can easily bring in a sufficient number of heavily armed socialists to overwhelm the team.
- Commissars can be quickly distinguished from ordinary Troopers, as they are equipped with both a pistol and an energy blade, and do not have a backpack.
- Commissars can toss grenades at Helldivers, which can be picked up and thrown back at the enemies by daring Helldivers.
- They perform a combo of melee and ranged attacks, but they'll only start to come after Helldivers once the Troopers, Raiders, and Marauders have been cleared out.
- The Commissar is vulnerable to grenades and headshots. The best way to defeat it while avoiding getting close to it is to aim for headshots or use grenades for a quick takedown.
- If a Commissar leading a patrol finds evidence of Helldiver activity, it will usually sprint into the area to investigate while the other Automaton slowly lags. Helldivers can use this to their advantage to single out and eliminate the Commissars before dealing with the rest of the patrol.
Notes
- Commissars can be encountered leading a group of Automatons on patrol; their presence can be noticed by the unintelligible robotic chanting the Commissar continuously emits.
- Due to the Socialist nature of the Automatons, it is likely that this class of Automaton is inspired by the Commissars/Political Officers of the Soviet Union.
- Visuals wise, the Commissar resembles the Comrade-class
Cyborg from the first game. - After performing a melee attack, the Commissar has a rather peculiar habit of standing still while crossing their arm over their chest, as if taunting their opponent or attempting to protect themselves. This however, leaves them completely open to retaliation.
- This could also be the reload animation for the Commissar, nevertheless they remain vulnerable to attacks during this opportunity.
- The fact that they used both a sword and a pistol in combat makes them similar to the commissars of the Astra Militarum in Warhammer 40,000
