Veld is one of the eight planets that reside within the Orion Sector.
Topography
Similar to Malevelon Creek, Veld is covered in thick tropical forests. Citizens are reminded to be wary of local flora and fauna, which may possess dangerous and/or undemocratic qualities.
History
Special Military Operations
Operation Veld Containment
Veld was one of the first planets to see action during the Special Military Operations that took place on the Terminid Front prior to the Second Galactic War. Shortly after the Automaton Expedition began, a Terminid outbreak occured on Veld not long after Heeth and neighboring Angel's Venture had been liberated. The liberation of Veld occurred without incident during the weeks of March 2184.
Following its liberation, Veld would remain at peace, in part due to the installation of the Terminid Control System on all four planets of the Umlaut Sector. Though the TCS spared Veld most of the horrors of war endured by other planets, the TCS eventually failed, culminating with the transformation of Meridia into a Terminid Supercolony.
Second Galactic War
Operation Enduring Peace
Peace would not last much longer on Veld. As Supercolony spore outbreaks spread in the vicinity of Meridia, the Helldivers struggled to contain the fascistic outbursts while also taking on the mechanical menace that loomed on the Western Front. On May 28th, Veld saw its first Terminid outbreak in two months, alongside with nearby Cirrus, an unconnected planet in the Orion System.
Veld thankfully withstood the assault, with the outbreak being heroically contained by the early hours of May 29th. It is not known why the Terminids would attempt an assault on this planet, with the leading hypothesis being a coordinated attempt by the fascistic insectoids to spread toward Moradesh and hamper the deployment of Dark Fluid. Their efforts were in vain, as the weapon was later used to destroy the Meridia Supercolony once and for all.
Operation Sushi Bar & Omens Undone
Since its final defense in May 2184, Veld stood as a beacon of liberty amidst an ever-changing Galactic War, a jewel of freedom that stood even in tough times for the SEAF. The War drastically changed over time, with our enemies becoming ever so brazen as time went on. Much of the Terminid Front became inaccessible for months as a result of The Gloom, a massive spore cloud, which became impossible to traverse for some time. Out West, the Automatons developed a horrid new strike force known as the
Jet Brigade, one which threatened the safety of not just our citizens, but our new weapon, the Democracy Space Station. Luckily, though the bots came very close to taking over our Space Station, the Helldivers precisely moved it off of Gaellivare's atmosphere with hours to spare, protecting our Station while the planet sadly fell. The Helldivers' valiant defense was fruitful, as the Space Station would prove a formidable ally, proving its worth time and time again.
In December 2184, the War would be changed forever as the
Illuminate, the enemy faction thought fully eradicated during the First Galactic War, somehow made a shocking return to the galaxy, seeking revenge for their pathetic defeat a century ago. The stunning development forced the Helldivers to the South to defend against the constant hit-and-run raids caused by the squids, changing the course of the War for some time.
In 2185, most Helldiver attention would be focused to the East and the South, as the Helldivers made their first expedition into The Gloom on Fori Prime, a massive military and scientific achievement in the fight against the Terminids. Simultaneously, the Illuminate began to somehow move the Meridian Wormhole right towards Super Earth, the Singularity violently destroying numerous planets with the Illuminate's mysterious plan now plain as clear to see.
Though the Automaton front burst back into life amidst a major offensive led by the bots in March, the Helldivers turned their attention back to the East during April as they made their second expedition into The Gloom on Nivel 43. The Operation was successful, and the final effort to stop the Meridian Singularity's advance was now underway, a Repulsive Gravity Field Generator that would resist the Singularity's movement enough to fully stop it on Pilen V.
On April 21, it was clear that the Illuminate became aware of the Gravity Field Generator being constructed on Pilen V as they launched a last-ditch attempt to stop Super Earth's fantastic scientific efforts to end their plan of carnage once and for all. High Command immediately issued an Order to defend against the Illuminate attacks on our research infrastructure by any means necessary. The Helldivers were mainly forced to focus on numerous attacks on Pilen, even at the cost of damage done to the
Centre of Science on Fenrir III.
Veld's colonists watched on as the Illuminate launched multiple attacks on the
Xenoentomology Centre on Turing. While the first attack was successfully repelled by the Helldivers, the second attack ended in a narrow defeat, and although the Illuminate, as per usual, retreated from the world despite collapsing its defenses, they dealt significant damage to the Centre on Turing, causing a catastrophic outbreak of mutated specimens that were kept securely for study purposes. As a result, Turing came under attack by the
Predator Strain, a strain of mutated Terminids that managed to essentially collapse Turing's defenses almost instantly.
Veld, which had enjoyed peace for nearly an entire year, was now seemingly right back in the firing line once again. Turing, a planet the Helldivers had constantly defended time and time again, was finally breached, and the Terminids were right on the doorstep of the beautiful blue forests of Veld.
Sure enough, hours after the fall of Turing, the Predator Strain began a violent assault on Veld with a force of 13 million broods making planetfall. With the Illuminate also beginning an attack on Mastia moments after, the Helldivers were forced to make a choice: complete the Order by fending off one last Illuminate assault, or contain yet another offensive launched by the Terminids.
As expected, the Helldivers deployed largely toward Mastia knowing that defending the planet would grant them a Major Order success. However, an interesting development occurred with the Democracy Space Station. The Helldivers activated the Eagle Storm booster on the Space Station hours earlier, which, if deployed to Veld, would halt the Terminid attack for around 10-12 hours. Many in the Corps suggested sending the DSS toward Veld, thus buying the Helldivers time to repel the Illuminate attack on Mastia and then turn back to Veld having not lost too much progress to the bugs.
Sadly, this didn't materialize, as the Corps opted to send the DSS to Mastia as a mechanism for mobilizing the majority of the Corps to the world to repel the Illuminate attack. With this decision, Veld was left to its own devices for the first 12 hours of its defense, and the bugs gained significant ground in this time. Luckily, at around 6 AM-SEST, the Helldivers were victorious on Mastia, granting them success for the Major Order as the main Helldiver fleet immediately turned up to Veld- along with the DSS, which still had around 4 hours left on Eagle Storm's booster. As such, the Helldivers gained key ground while the Terminids were paralyzed for 4 hours straight. The situation was turned around as a result, and the Helldivers began to outpace the bugs even with Eagle Storm ending.
All seemed hopeful for Veld- until new roadblocks emerged. After losing their offensive for Mastia, the Illuminate disappeared for around 10 hours, re-gathering their forces and seeking to redress their defeats. They once again unleashed more assaults, getting more desperate as they sought to target Pilen V once again. Simultaneously, the Automatons launched a relatively small assault on Gaellivare, with both developments draining some resources from Veld. Even so, the Helldivers were still on pace for victory- until High Command issued a new Order, demanding the Helldivers thin the ranks of the Illuminate, protect Pilen V, and liberate Veld's invader, Turing.
Now, the race for Veld was under serious threat of failing. With the Helldivers deploying to both the Illuminate campaigns and Turing, support for both Veld and Gaellivare's defenses began to drain quickly, though Veld still retained thousands of Helldivers on its surface. Despite this, the tide began to turn against the Helldivers, and the momentum suddenly fell back to the Terminids on the world who began to accelerate their progress toward collapsing its defenses. With the decision not to send the DSS earlier on to Veld looming large, the campaign for Veld suddenly looked like failure was a greater possibility now.
Veld would officially fall to the Terminid swarm on the 29th of April, 2184 and although a campaign would be launched to liberate the planet on the 4th of May, this campaign would be tragically short lived...
Operation Equilibrium
A Major Earthquake Warning would be issued for Veld on May 6th at 2:20pm SEST. Not long after a 9.4 magnitude earthquake would be recorded, causing wide spread destruction but also decimated a large Terminid colony, allowing a significant gain in territory. However whether the SEAF could hold that ground was in severe doubt, especially with the majority of the Helldivers Corps deployed to different fronts. Luckily, in the early hours of May 9th, the
Helldivers would deploy en masse to Veld's surface following the liberation of Claorell and the
Deep Mantle Forge Complex from the Automatons.
Unfortunately this mass deployment would be short lived as the Incineration Corps would attack Curia whilst the Jet Brigade assaulted Demiurg. Having only increased the Veld's liberation level to 28%, the Helldivers would shift their focus to Curia and successfully wipe out one of the Incineration Corps divisions and then move on to defend Demiurg, only for a predator strain outbreak to occur on the following morning of May 10th, on the planet of Sulfura -- further splitting the
Helldivers focus.
As such, the beachhead on Veld had been mostly forgotten and whilst local SEAF and a battalion's worth of
Helldivers were able to maintain the foothold. The beachhead would last for some weeks until an outbreak of the
Predator Strain quickly decimated this garrison force.
Operation Ashes of Remembrance
Even as the last of the
Illuminate Great Host retreated from
Super Earth on the 30th of May, reconstruction efforts on humanity's homeworld began almost immediately. These efforts would continue into July when on the 8th, when the
Ministry of Prosperity declared that Remembrance would be the first of our fallen Mega Cities to be rebuilt. Though destroyed almost completely early into the
Illuminate invasion, it would serve as a new monument to humanity's indomitable spirit.
Of course in order to fund the greater fortification, greater security, and greater opportunities that this noble endeavor would no doubt bring, the final balance of war restitution owed by the
Illuminate, and by their formally-recognized
Terminids abettors would have to be collected. As such, High Command would designate several worlds that would need to be reclaimed in order to seize the required assets, with Veld being one of them.
Efforts by the
Helldivers to reclaim the world would be slow, but steady, hindered only occasionally by the bloody meat grinder of urban warfare (resulting in a notably unusual decay rate). Veld would not be fully secure until the liberation of the planetary capital of Laelia on July 11th, though reconstruction efforts would be (temporarily) hindered by the steel & concrete reserves allocated to colony housing being shipped to Remembrance instead.

Trivia
- Veld in Dutch and Afrikaans directly means 'field' and is used in both languages and others to also describe a type of wide open rural landscape in Southern Africa. In Southern Africa it is most commonly attributed to savanna grasslands, but there are also other sub-classifications of velds. While the word 'savanna' is attributed to identical or similar environments found in Eastern Africa, but has a description overlap with 'veld' for Southern Africa.
- Laelia are a small genus of 25 species in the orchid family, which are found in areas of subtropical or temperate climate in Central and South America, but mostly in Mexico.
- Cle Elum is is a city in Kittitas County, Washington. The town takes its name from the Cle Elum River, which is a tributary of the Yakima River. The future site of the city was originally called named Clealum after the Kittitas name Tie-el-Lum, meaning "swift water", referring to the Cle Elum River. In 1908, Clealum was altered to Cle Elum, with this spelling coming to be used for the river as well.
- "Rediviva" means "revived" or "brought back to life." It's a Latin word, specifically the feminine form of "redivivus", which translates to "living again." In some contexts, it can also mean "restored" or "re-used."
