In Helldivers 2, an Operation is a set of Missions that are grouped together on the Galactic War Map. While some rewards are applied at the time of collection or at the end of each operation, most are affected by difficulty, and Squad Impact only gets applied upon completion of the last mission in a operation.
After the second difficulty, operations have more than one mission. They can be completed in any order, but all of them must be completed for the operation to count towards the ongoing planetary campaign.
Difficulties
Operations can be one of ten difficulties, from Trivial to Super Helldive. Each difficulty has different rewards. The sample counter in-game only shows the number of samples that exist in the world, from those that can be found in Objective Sites to those that can be found within Outposts and Points of Interest.
World Generation can sometimes prevent the full number of rewards spawning, with an example being how the Super Sample rock can fail to generate on Colony Operations. However, World Generation can also generate extra rewards that aren't accounted, such as extra Rare Samples. Below, you will find the average amount of rewards you are able to find in an operation without accounting for extra samples that may spawn inside Bunkers or Drop Pods.
| Difficulty | Rarest Sample | Missions | Side Objectives | Warbond Medals | Number of Samples (excepting Exterminate Missions) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 - Trivial | 1 | 0 | 1 | ||
| 2 - Easy | 1 | 1-2 | 2 | ||
| 3 - Medium | 2 | 2-3 | 2/4 | ||
| 4 - Challeging | 2 | 3 | 3/5 | ||
| 5 - Hard | 3 | 3-4 | 4/6/8 | ||
| 6 - Extreme | 3 | 3-4 | 5/7/9 | ||
| 7 - Suicide | 3 | 4 | 6/8/10 | ||
| 8 - Impossible | 3 | 4-5 | 7/10/12 | ||
| 9 - Helldive | 3 | 4-5 | 8/11/14 | ||

Squad Impact
Squad Impact is the total contribution towards the defense or liberation of the planet an Operation was completed in. Squad Impact is determined at the end of every mission, with Operation completion (that is, the whole set of missions) granting an additional squad impact bonus. Prior to patch 01.003.000, Squad Impact was only granted after operation completion.
1 point of Squad Impact equals 0.0010%, meaning that for every point of Squad Impact gained, a planet is liberated/defended by 0.001%.
Squad Impact is calculated based on the average amount of Experience accrued throughout the mission, incentivizing players to complete as many Secondary Objectives and destroying as many Outposts as possible. Additionally, players deaths during the mission can affect the Squad Impact calculation, which means that players should also try their best to use as few reinforcements as possible by thinking tactically as they go through their missions.
A bonus to Squad Impact is granted once the final mission of an Operation is completed. The calculations behind said bonus and how it functions are still unknown.
However, Squad Impact is also determined by the Galactic Impact Modifier. The Galactic Impact Modifier is inversely proportional to the number of players online, meaning that the more Helldivers there are connected, the lower the Galactic Impact Modifier gets. In addition, Squad Impact is also capped depending on the difficulty, so that players don't spam lower difficulty missions.
Players can consult the Galactic Impact Modifier by checking the Helldivers Companion App and clicking the Overview tab.
Types of Operations
There are two types of Operations, Normal Operations and City Operations.
Operation
A Normal
Operation is a set of missions that take place in the less populated areas of a planet, where the planet's natural surface is mostly untouched. If the planet is in a liberation campaign, it's called "
Peacekeeping Operation", if the planets is under the
Illuminate it's called "
Disrupt Illuminate", if the planets is in a defence campaign it's called "
Defend Planet".

A
City Operation is a set of missions that takes place in a city, they are named after the city they are in and cannot change position.
Commando Operation
Commando Operations, as the name suggests, are operations undertaken deep behind enemy lines. Super Destroyer support is unavailable throughout the whole mission and no reinforcements or stratagems can be called in. Helldivers must proceed carefully and stealthily, as every enemy encounter (bot drops, illuminate ship calls or bug breaches) increases the threat level of the mission PERMANENTLY, which means that patrols will spawn more frequently and contain more and more enemies.
The only way to call in Stratagems during these operations is by first utilizing the Call In Super Destroyer Stratagem, which calls the Super Destroyer into Low Orbit for 60 seconds. Only during said 60 seconds can Stratagems be deployed, as the Super Destroyer will be constantly taking fire from both orbital defenses on the ground and surrounding enemy spaceships.
