This is a page about the lore of Helldivers 1 & 2.
Galactic War
Helldivers 2 is set in the years 2184-2186, a century after the victory of
Super Earth and its
Helldivers over the
Cyborgs, the
Bugs, and the
Illuminate after the events of the first game. Super Earth discovered that, upon death, the
Terminids produce a unique and highly valuable resource, Element-710. Terminid farms were established on human-colonized worlds. However, containment is eventually breached, releasing the Bugs and causing chaos and destruction in the eastern sectors of the galaxy. Simultaneously, a new threat emerges from the west in the form of the
Automatons, a mechanical army intent on destroying humanity.
Helldivers, who are elite shock troops dropped from orbit to reclaim the colonized lands, are redeployed to regain control over stolen lands and ordered to engage in liberation campaigns across the galaxy once more.
Environmental storytelling is prevalent throughout the game, with various logs, notes, and propaganda messages available for players to find during gameplay. The story and progress of the war is told through community-driven objectives called Major Orders.
S.E.A.F.
The
Super Earth Armed Forces, a.k.a "SEAF," is the military arm of the
Super Earth Government. They employ
Helldivers and
S.E.A.F. troopers to accomplish their goals, and defend Super Earth citizens and territory.
SEAF Troops
Super Earth Armed Forces troopers are the rank-and-file soldiers of humanity. While
Helldivers serve as shock troops, quick-response units, and special forces,
S.E.A.F. troopers are equivalent to planetary garrisons. They are not present in Helldiver propaganda videos, but do appear as casualties strewn across many worlds the Helldivers must conquer.
S.E.A.F. troopers wear off-white fatigues, black combat boots, and blue armor, consisting of a helmet, chest, and back plate. They carry standard-issue weaponry, such as the AR-23 Liberator and P-2 Peacemaker.
Normally, while no living
S.E.A.F. units are seen in-game, their corpses can be spotted on several planets; usually, they are found with ammunition and other supplies nearby. During the Battle for Super Earth, however,
S.E.A.F. units could be found wandering the planet's Mega Cities, armed with the aforementioned weaponry as well as the occasional EAT-17 Expendable Anti-Tank.
It is implied that the SEAF SAM sites and missile silos are normally staffed by
S.E.A.F. troopers. As a result of abandonment, or a massacre, these strategic points have been left unguarded in-game.
Helldivers can take over and operate these defenses to make their mission easier.
